A presumably Central German carved wooden depiction of Saint Dorothy, circa 1490

Carved from two blocks, the reverse flattened. Minimal remains of former polychromy.. A silhouetted relief of the saint facing right. According to legend, Dorothy was accompanied to her execution by a boy carrying a basket of roses and apples. This fine carving is characterised by the harmonious contrast between the smooth and softly modelled folds of the dress with the less richly draped areas.
With vertical hairline cracks. Losses to the crown, fingers and feet of the boy. Wear. 128 x 52 x 10 cm.
