Bruges early 16th century

An early 16th century Bruges carved oak figure of the Virgin enthroned

Carved nearly in the round and partially freestanding, the reverse slightly flattened and deeply hollowed out. Minor remains of former polychromy.. A figure of the Madonna designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. She sits upon a cushioned throne, holding the nude Christ Child before Her with both hands whilst he reaches for her veil in tender gesture. This finely worked figure is characterised by the particularly lively and balanced scheme of its drapery. The compressed folds of the cloak pulled around the Virgin's body and concealing her knee and right hand form a particularly intriguing contrast to the plainness of her gown.
Minimal wear. Height 67 cm.
