Flemish circa 1520

A Flemish carved wooden figure of the Virgin and Child, circa 1520

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse deeply hollowed out. Remains of older polychromy.. A full-figure depiction of the Madonna standing in contrapposto and holding an apple in Her left hand. The Christ Child is depicted clothed and held in the Virgin's right arm above Her hip whilst He grasps for a string of beads. The work's sculptural quality is largely defined by the composition of the robes, in which the central curving folds present an interesting contrast to the undulating seams of the cloak.
Losses due to insect damage to the back of the Virgin's head and to the plinth. A broad crack to the back of the shoulder. The Virgin's left hand possibly a replacement. Height 115 cm.
