German mid-16th century

A German mid-16th century carved ivory medallion depicting the Crucifixion

A small, concave oval medallion surrounded by a narrow border. The centre finely carved with a densely populated high-relief depiction of Christ's crucifixion. The medallion is loosely set into a tortoiseshell frame via an ivory mounting ring. The frame is backed with paper and is inscribed with a dedication in German which can be dated to around 1800, stating that the piece was given as a christening present. This lot also includes the fitted leather case of the same period.
With a minute loss to the right below the cross, otherwise in perfect condition. The upper edge of the frame loose, one small loss to the lower right of the frame. Medaillon 5.0 x 3.9 cm, frame 6.8 x 5.7 cm.
