Marie-Louise Bastin (in a written expertise) identifies the present figure as coming from the school of Muzamba, which developed in the western part of the Chokwe’s original territory, at the latest at the end of the last century. A photograph taken at the Portuguese Colonial Exhibition organized by Geographical Society of Lisbon in 1885 shows a group of similar figures, strongly suggesting a 19th century date for this figure.
