Two Italian carved lavastone figures of Venus

Two finely carved figures after the Antique. Some breakages. H 38.8 and 38.3 cm.
Presumably Rome, early 19th C.

The figures after which these sculptures have been carved, namely the Venus Medici now housed in the Uffizi and the Capitoline Venus, were both based on the famous Hellenistic figure of the "Aphrodite of Knidos", which was made by the Greek sculptor Praxiteles. Both sculptures follow the Venus pudica, or modest Venus, type. The figures both surely originate from the same workshop, and are the kind of souvenir acquired by wealthy Grand Tourists on their way through Central Italy to visit the sites of Roman antiquity.
