Flemish School, 16th century

St. Jerome

Oil on copper. 38 x 29.5 cm.

This depiction of St. Jerome in his study by a Flemish artist is based on a work by Albrecht Dürer, painted in 1521, which is now housed in the Museum Nacional de Arte Antiga in Lissabon. The composition appears to have been quite popular in Antwerp, especially among the circle of Joos van Cleve, who also painted a copy after Dürer's original.
