Maasland, late 14th century

A late 14th century Maasland carved walnut figure of the Virgin with Child

Carved in the round. Extensive remains of presumably original polychromy. A figure of the Virgin standing on a rectangular moulded plinth, designed for a slightly lowered viewpoint. Christ is depicted in His Mother’s arms clothed in a long white robe. The vertical pleats of the Virgin’s gown and the drapery of the cloak that She holds drawn around Her body towards the Christ Child accentuate the figure’s slightly swaying contrapposto pose.
The formerly pegged on right hand and crown of the Virgin, and the arm of the Child lacking. Minimal wear. Height 41 cm.
