Northern Italy, mid-15th century

A mid-15th century North Italian reliquary bust

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and the lower back deeply hollowed out. Remains of older polychromy. A finely carved bust of a bearded saint in a monk’s habit. He bears no attribute and the reliquary capsule to the chest is vacant. The figure is thought to be North Italian, and an origin in Milan has recently been suggested.
Some vertical cracks. Minimal wear. Mounted on an associated moulded plinth. Height 37 cm (without plinth).

Provenance

Collection of Prof. Dr. Hans Waege, Belgium.
