Südtirol, circa 1470/1480

A carved pinewood figure of the Virgin from an Annunciation(?), South Tyrol, circa 1470/1480

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. With partially overpainted older polychromy. This work, designed to be viewed from the front and sides, is characterised by a strong sense of movement: The left leg crosses the right, and the torso is depicted drawn back, pushing the stomach forwards. The figure holds her voluminous, richly draped cloak drawn across her body and her hand aloft. This stance allows for a likely identification of the figure as the Virgin Mary reacting to the Angel of the Annunciation, although the crown would be unusual for this depiction.
Wear with minor losses, especially to the crown. Height 86 cm.

Provenance

Collection of Prof. Dr. Hans Waege, Belgium.
