Brussels, circa 1470/1480

A carved oak Corpus Christi, Brussels, circa 1470/1480

Carved in the round, the reverse very slightly flattened. The arms visibly attached. Extensive remains of presumably original polychromy. A depiction of Christ on the cross, crucified with three nails. His head hangs limply to one side and His arms and shoulders are contorted outwards. The fine carving of the facial features, anatomy, and drapery of the perizonium testify to the quality of this piece. The hammer mark to the top of the head indicates an origin in Brussels.
Minimal wear. Height 95 cm, width of arms 83 cm.

Provenance

Collection of Prof. Dr. Hans Waege, Belgium.
