Brabant, circa 1470/1480

A carved walnut figure of the Virgin and Child, Brabant, circa 1470/1480

Carved in the round, the central area of the reverse only summarily worked. With partially overpainted older polychromy. A figure of the crowned Virgin standing in contrapposto, designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. She is depicted holding the Christ Child, whilst He in turn holds a bunch of grapes as a symbol of the Eucharist in His left hand. The compressed folds and framing vertical pleats of the Virgin’s cloak accentuate Her tall and slender figure. The work is possibly the product of a Brussels workshop.
The Child's right arm broken off and reattached. The Virgin's right hand possibly replaced. Wear with minor losses. Height 105 cm.

Provenance

Collection of Prof. Dr. Hans Waege, Belgium.
