Brabant, circa 1500/1510

A Brabantine carved oak figure of St. Sebastian, circa 1500/1510

Carved in the round and partially freestanding. Extensive remains of presumably original older polychromy. The saint is depicted suffering his martyrdom clothed solely in a gilt perizonium fastened around his hips, with his right arm bound above his head and his left forced bend his back and bound to the trunk of a tree issuing from an earth mound base. Five drilled holes in the body, surrounded by painted drops of blood, indicate the presence of arrows, which have since been lost.
Round cracks to the plinth and ankles, thin vertical cracks to the torso. Wear with losses to the fingers and bonds. Height 170 cm.

Provenance

Collection of Prof. Dr. Hans Waege, Belgium.
