Probably Burgundy, early 16th century

A carved wood relief with Christ at the Column, probably Burgundy, early 16th century

Presumably walnut, the reverse flattened. Both pieces with minor remains of former polychromy. A high-relief depiction of Christ bound to the column surrounded by soldiers. The piece was sawn in half at some point during its history, and the two halves have been correspondingly pierced. Hans Waege purchased the two pieces in different places years apart from each other, thus bringing them together again in his collection.
Minimal wear. 37 x 25 x 5.5 and 37 x 24 x 5.5 cm.

Provenance

Collection of Prof. Dr. Hans Waege, Belgium.
