An early 16th century Mechelen carved wooden figure of the Virgin and Child

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. The polychromy presumably original but partially overpainted. A figure of the Virgin Mary standing in balanced contrapposto, dressed in a long golden cloak. She supports the Christ Child with Her right hand, and He is shown grasping for the open book that She hands to Him. The sculpture is marked to the reverse with a painted house mark “IT” above the number “2”.
Minimal wear. Height 38 cm.
