An Antwerp carved oak fragment of an Entombment scene, circa 1510/1520

Partially freestanding, the reverse flattened. With largely original polychromy, the hair presumably overpainted. The round grain visible to the underside of this piece indicates that it was originally carved from two blocks. The right edge of the piece is entirely smooth. A corresponding figure of Nicodemus assisting Joseph of Arimathea with the body of Christ may have completed the original composition.
With minimal wear. 46 x 22 x 10 cm.
