A carved wooden figure of St. Barbara from the studio of Paul of Levoca

Carved in the round. Partially overpainted older polychromy. The side panel of the altarpiece of Sabinov carved by Paul of Levoca and now housed in the Hungarian National Museum in Budapest includes a highly similar figure of St. Barbara, which like the present work can also be dated to around 1510/1515. Master Paul of Levoca founded a workshop in the Slovakian town of Levoca, and the main altar of the Church of St. Jacob in this town, completed in 1517, is considered his finest work.
Two cracks to the reverse. Losses to the crown, other minor wear. Height 75 cm.
