Probably Franconia, circa 1520/1530

A presumably Franconia carved limewood figure of St. John, circa 1520/1530

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out. Minimal remains of former polychromy. A standing figure of the youthful saint designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. His bowed head and pointing gesture indicate that the piece possibly originally belonged to a crucifixion group. The detailed carving of the facial features and the finely rendered drapery show that the artist may have been familiar with the works of Tilman Riemenschneider.
A vertical crack reaching from the head to the left shoulder. The shoulder with minor cracks to the reverse. The closure to the edge of the right shoulder presumably an older addition. Minimal wear. Height 102 cm.

Provenance

Collection of Prof. Dr. Hans Waege, Belgium.
