Northern Spain, 13th century

A 13th century Northern Spanish carved wood figure of the Virgin Enthroned

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and slightly hollowed out. With older, presumably 16th century, polychromy; the faces overpainted. Designed for a frontal viewpoint. The enthroned Madonna is shown holding a clothed figure of Christ on Her left knee. Both figures are crowned, and Christ holds a book in His left hand, thus the figure can be referred to as a "sedes sapientiae" (Throne of Wisdom).
The previously pegged right hands lost. Losses due to insect damage to the lower section. Minimal wear. Height 62 cm.
