Probably Central Rhine Region, 14th century

A 14th century carved wood figure of the Virgin as a shrine, presumably Central Rhine Region

Carved three-quarters in the round in four parts, the reverse flattened. Minimal remains of former polychromy.. A figure of the Virgin holding the standing Christ Child with Her left arm (the right arm lost). The Virgin's chest is worked in two pieces and can be opened via hinges. It was presumably used like a tabernacle as a container for the consecrated host.
The head and left hand of the Child lost. The Madonna's face presumably subsequently ammended. The upper and lower sections held together with metal staples. The hinges and clasps renewed. Losses due to insect damage. Height 80 cm.
