Probably Lothringen, mid-14th century

A carved walnut figure of an Apostle, probably Lorraine, mid-14th century

Carved in the round. With remains of former polychromy, especially to the reverse. A full-figure depiction of a saint, standing calmly and holding a book in his left hand. The attribute in his right hand that would have provided a clue as to the figure's identity is now lost, but the manner in which he is depicted, especially the facial features, speak for an apostle.
The right hand lost. Wear, especially prominently to the book. Losses due to insect damage, the reverse of the plinth replaced. Height 67 cm.
