Probably Upper Rhine-Region, 14th century

A 14th century carved ivory diptych, presumably Upper Rhine Region

With possible remains of former polychromy. The diptych is smooth to the outside, and the frames around the depictions to the interior are also plain and unmoulded. The slightly indented pictorial fields enclose raised reliefs of the Crucifixion with Mary and St. John to the right, and the Madonna flanked by two angels to the left. Both scenes are depicted beneath Gothic architectural canopies.
Minimal cracks to the edges. Six tiny drilled holes. The hinges defective. Slightly yellowed. Each panel 9.2 x 5 cm.
