Swabia, circa 1470/1480

A Swabian carved wooden figure of the Virgin and Child, circa 1470/1480

Presumably limewood, carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and deeply hollowed out. With older polychromy, the white presumably original; the remaining areas, including the faces, overpainted. A large sculpture designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. The Virgin is depicted standing in contrapposto with Her extended right foot resting on the face of the man in the moon. She leans back slightly with her head lightly bowed, holding the nude Christ Child who presents a bunch of grapes as a symbol of the Eucharist. The fine carving of this piece is particularly evident in the voluminous folds of the cloak draped around the Virgin’s shoulders. The cloak’s rich pattern of V-shaped drapery contrasts harmoniously with the vertical pleats of the gown and its undulating seams frame the sides of the piece in thinly carved and deeply undercut curves.
The upper part of the head flattened, the crown replaced. A crack to the back of the head. Minimal wear. Height 153 cm.
