Probably Flemish, 2nd half 15th century

A presumably Flemish carved wood relief of the Adoration of the Child, 2nd half 15th century

Partially freestanding, minimal remains of former polychromy.. The group of Mary, Joseph, the ox and ass, and an approaching shepherd adoring the Christ Child laying on a lappet of Mary's robe is here depicted framed by the roof of the stable resting on two freestanding columns. The fineness of the carving is particularly evident in the drapery of the figures' clothing.
Joseph's hands lacking. Vertical hairline cracks, the tip of the gable split, a minor loss to the reverse behind the ox. Mounted on a thin, wedge-shaped wooden board. 46 x 44 x 10 cm.

Provenance

Formerly the collection of Antoine Van Hoe-Similon, Waterloo.
