Probably Franconia, late 15th century

A late 15th century carved wooden Pieta group, presumably Franconian

The reverse flattened and hollowed out. No remains of polychromy found. A depiction of the Virgin sitting on a rock, cradling Her Son's body in Her lap. Carved in high-relief for a slightly lowered viewpoint. The sculpture may originally have been designed without polychromy, and its composition lives from the contrast between Christ's unclothed flesh and the drapery of the perizonium and His Mother's long cloak.
A crack to the left wrist of Christ. Wear with minor losses. 65 x 59 x 11 cm.

Provenance

Formerly collection of Antoine Van-Similon, Waterloo.
