Probably Lower Rhine Region, late 15th century

A late 15th century carved wooden figure of St. Barbara, presumably Lower Rhine Region

Carved partially in the round, the reverse flattened and slightly hollowed out. Remains of former polychromy. A figure of the saint standing in a gently swaying pose on a moulded plinth and holding an open book in her left hand. She is depicted next to the tower as her identifying attribute, the martyr's palm in her right hand is now lost. The fineness of the carving is particularly evident in the headdress, hair, facial features, and robes.
The tower reattached. Two drilled holes below the hands. Wear with minor losses. Height 71 cm.

Provenance

Formerly the Dierckens Collection, Ghent.
