Probably Lower Rhine Region, late 15th century

A late 15th century carved oak depiction of St. Anne teaching Mary to read, probably Lower Rhenish

Carved three quarters in the round, the reverse deeply hollowed out. Possibly with minimal traces of former polychromy. A large group designed for a slightly lowered viewpoint. St. Anne is depicted in matronly attire holding her daughter Mary on her left knee and teaching her to read from the open book in her right hand. The group's sculptural effect is largely defined by the detailed depiction of the robes, in which deeply moulded drapery is effectively contrasted with smooth areas.
Some of Mary's fingers lost. The front edge of the plinth and the back of the throne reattached. Minimal wear. Height 104 cm.

Provenance

Formerly collection of Antoine Van Hoe-Similon, Waterloo.
