Spain, late 15th century

A late 15th century Spanish carved wooden figure of the Virgin with a Grape Vine

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. With presumably original polychromy (partially overpainted). A large-format figure of a Saint in a fashionable headdress and ornate gown, designed for a frontal viewpoint. The eucharistic symbolism of the vine which the figure holds in Her outstretched right hand means that she can most likely be identified as the Virgin Mary. The sculptor of this piece was apparently influenced by contemporary Flemish art.
The left hand lost. A crack to the reverse. Losses to the sides due to insect damage. Some wear. Height 117 cm.

Provenance

Formerly collection of Antoine Van Hoe-Similon, Waterloo.
