A presumably Flemish carved wood figure of the Virgin at Prayer, circa 1490/1500

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out. With partially overpainted older polychromy.. A figure of the Virgin designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. She appears to float, and holds Her clasped hands raised to chest height. The Virgin wears a long white under-dress over a pleated red gown, which contrasts starkly with the blue cloak around her shoulders. However, the manner in which the figure is painted makes it hard to differentiate the various items of clothing.
Minimal wear with losses to the polychromy. Some fine vertical cracks to the reverse. The hands possibly replaced. Height 92 cm.
