Probably Flemish, early 16th century

An early 16th century carved relief of Four Men before a Rock, probably Flemish

The reverse flattened. Remains of older polychromy. This silhouetted relief depicts four men - one of them a so-called "lansquenet" - in lively, gesticulating poses before a rocky landscape. The group is shown moving towards the right, indicating that the piece originates from a larger depiction, probably of Christ's crucifixion.
The right hand and left arm of the central figure and the left arm of the figure of the outer right lost. Minimal wear. 45 x 34 x 8 cm.

Provenance

Formerly collection of Antoine Van Hoe-Similon, Waterloo.
