Probably Flemish, first half 16th century

A presumably Flemish relief of Christ Carrying the Cross, first half 16th century

Carved from two blocks, the reverse flattened. Minimal remains of polychromy.. An openwork relief depicting Christ surrounded by soldiers during the passion. Simon von Cyrene is shown crouching on the left helping Him to carry the cross, and Saint Veronica stands beside him holding the sudarium with His image. The piece probably originally formed part of a passion altarpiece.
The sticks in the hands of the two middle soldiers, the right forearm, and the left hand of the two on the right lost. With minimal wear. 51 x 59 x 6 cm.

Provenance

Formerly the collection of Antoine Van Hoe-Similon, Waterloo.
