Goa, 18th century

An 18th century Goa carved ivory figure of St. Francis Xavier

Carved in the round and pegged to an associated wooden plinth. With original partial polychromy. A depiction of the saint in priestly garb holding a crucifix in his hand. The rosette on the plinth identifies him with the initials "S.F.X."
Two fingers partially lost. Vertical hairline cracks. Height 19 cm (without plinth).

Formerly Brenninkmeyer Collection, Brussels (purchased from Hermann Baer art dealers, London).
