Maasland early 16th century

A Maasland carved wooden figure of Lambert of Maastricht, early 16th century

Carved in the round, the reverse of the plinth flattened, the reverse of the figure more roughly carved. Partially overpainted older polychromy. The bishop is depicted standing in pronounced contrapposto on a hexagonal base, designed for a lowered viewpoint. He is shown turned slightly to one side with his head bowed. An interesting detail of his bishop's garb is the rationale worn around the shoulders. This particular item of clothing is only worn by representatives of old episcopal sees such as Liège, where the bones of St. Lambertus are housed.
The left hand and the right arm lost. The lappets of the mitre lost. Some wear. Height 85 cm.
