Austria circa 1510/1520

An Austrian carved wooden figure of a saint with a book, circa 1510/1520

Carved in the round. With remains of older polychromy, the flesh-tones retouched.. A large, standing figure of a bare-headed saint dressed in a cope and rochet, holding a book in his extended right hand. He presumably originally held an abbot's crozier in his left hand, in which case the figure could be interpreted as a depiction of Saint Benedict. The distinctive and finely carved drapery of the robes suggests a localisation to the upper Austrian region around Salzburg.
A crack to the back of the shoulder. Wear with losses. Height 140 cm.

Provenance

Private collection, Switzerland (on permanent loan to the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen).
