Flemish circa 1540/1550

A Flemish carved oak depiction of St. Jerome, circa 1540/1550

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. Minimal remains of former polychromy. A depiction of the standing doctor of the church wearing a cardinal's hat and carrying a staff, with a lion at his feet as his attribute. The bracket decorated with grotesque fish whose tails terminate in elaborate scrolls. This detail allows the piece to be dated to before the middle of the 16th century, with Utrecht as the most likely origin.
The staff terminal, the central fold of the robe, the lion's front left paw, and the left side of the reverse replaced. Left thumb lacking. Height 66 cm.
