A 14k gold peridot bangle

A hinged bangle. The decorative clasp with finely chased Rococo Revival decor. Set with a cushion-cut peridot (ca. 7.55 ct) and two pear-cut peridots (each ca. 2.17 ct). A small capsule with a hairwork inset to the reverse. With safety chain. Diameter 5 x 6 cm. Weight 52.8 g.
Presumably England, ca. 1840/50.

These greenish-yellow gemstones, also known as chrysolith, were highly fashionable in the mid-19th century. Since antiquity, the finest examples have been found on St. John's Island (Zabargad) in the Red Sea.
