A Historicist Heidelberg silver chalice

The lid with a model of a lion supporting a shield engraved with a coat-of-arms monogrammed "G.F.B.K.G.S. et W.D. in F." and with the inscribed motto "Memoria Fidei Bendorff anno 1742". H 33,5 cm, weight 620 g
Marks of Nikolaus Trübner, ca. 1900.

The Heidelberg court jeweller Nikolaus Trübner specialised in various historical revival styles. The present work is apparently a replica of a Baroque design which the Burggraf of Kirchberg presented to the town of Bendorf in 1742, and which is presumably still kept in the Bendorf municipal archives today. The engraved inscriptions would thus stand for: Georg Friedrich, Burggraf von Kirchberg, Graf von Sayn und Wittgenstein (...) in commemoration of Bendorf's loyalty 1742.
