An important George IV silver salver

A large lobed dish resting on four solid silver scroll feet. Engraved to the centre with the Goldsmid family arms amid acanthus and shellwork. Finely chased border of male and female mascarons amid acanthus and shellwork. Incised scratchweight "179.12" to the underside. Diameter 58 cm, weight 5,500 g.
London, marks of Thomas Watson, 1826.

The coat-of-arms is thought to be that of the Jewish banker Sir Isaac Lyon Goldsmid (1778 - 1859). He was decisive in the founding of the University of London in 1837, and in 1841 he became the first Jew in England to be created a Baronet in honour of his services to the country.
