Louis de Caullery

Courtly Company amid Roman Ruins

Oil on copper. 50.5 x 65.5 cm.

Louis de Caullery was probably born in 1580 in Caullery, a small town close to Cambrai. Sources record that he entered the studio of Josse de Momper in around 1593/94 under the name Loys Solleri. His works are most heavily influenced by the architectural compositions of Paul Vredeman de Vries, but his figures are inspired more by Sebastiaen Vrancx and Frans Francken. Only two of this artist's works are signed in full: One depiction of a carnival in the Hamburger Kunsthalle, and a fête galante owned by the Louvre, which can be viewed in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Cambrai. The latter image is dated 1620. A further piece depicting an allegory of the senses monogrammed “LC” and dated 1618 is kept in Mühlhausen Castle in the Czech Republic.
This copper panel bears the stamp of the Antwerp Guild to the reverse, as well as that of Pieter Stas, which is dated 1604.
