Probably Cologne 2nd quarter 14th century

A carved wooden figure of the Virgin, probably Cologne, 2nd quarter 14th century

Carved in the round, the reverse only summarily worked. Extensive remains of older polychromy, overpainted in areas. A full-figure depiction of the Virgin designed for a frontal viewpoint. She is shown standing in pronounced contrapposto, her stance forming a typically Gothic S-form curve. Ernst Günther Grimme (op. cit.) already described this Rhenish sculpture as a Madonna figure in 1951. The lacking crown and the figure of the Christ Child, originally held in Her right hand, would have balanced out the exaggerated ponderation.
The hands lost. The top of the head lost. Wear with losses to the plinth. Height 67 cm.

Provenance

Collection of Hubert Lüttgens, Aachen.
