South German late 15th century

A late 15th century South German carved wooden figure of Saint Elisabeth

Carved in the round, the reverse only summarily worked. Extensive remains of older polychromy. A standing figure of the saint designed for a frontal viewpoint. She holds her attribute, a basket of fruit, with both hands. The figure is enlivened by the contrast of the regularly curving hems and thick folds of the deeply moulded cloak against the long vertical pleats of the gown.
The left front and right side of the plinth replaced. Minimal wear. Height 27 cm.
