Flemish 1st half 16th century

A Flemish carved oak relief of the Entombment, 1st half 16th century

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. Minimal remains of former polychromy.. In this unusual depiction of the Entombment, the older figures of Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea support the body of Christ accompanied by the Virgin, Saint John, and Mary Magdalene. This passion scene forms a pendant to the previous lot, depicting Christ carrying the cross, which originates from the same workshop.
A small loss to the front of the plinth. Vertical cracks. 65 x 35 x 14 cm.

Provenance

Private collection, North West Germany.
