Probably Spain or Portugal 17th century (?)

A carved ivory pieta group, presumably Spanish or Portuguese, 17th century

Carved in the round, with extensive remains of presumably original polychromy. A finely carved devotional sculpture. Although the piece displays some stylistic elements comparable to late Gothic works of the 15th century, the design of the rocky outcrop speaks more for an allocation to the Baroque era. The lively contrast between the white of the ivory and the polychromy of the hair, eyes, lips, and Christ's wounds is an unual but effective touch.
Drilled holes to the top and bottom. Vertical hairline cracks. Height 15 cm.

Provenance

Private collection, Northwest Germany.
