Otto Dix

Toter Soldat
1922

Etching on firm chamois-coloured copperplate printing paper 28.1 x 34.7 cm (43.5 x 50 cm) Framed under glass. Signed and dated lower right, numbered left, and inscribed 'Tod und Auferstehung' in lower centre. Proof 10/50. - From the series "Tod und Auferstehung" comprising 6 etchings. Print of the 1st state, very rare as such. - Concise vivid print.- Minimal staining in the wide margins; small marginal tear on the right.

The etching from the cycle "Tod und Auferstehung", signed and dated '22/DIX' in the plate at the right margin, sharp-cut and concisly printed, shows the exceptionally contrasting first state before the more detailed reworking. It was known to Florian Karsch in a single copy marked "proof" by Dix. This numbered copy from the Koch Collection was apparently mixed in with the numbered portfolio edition of the second state (cf. Karsch 47/II) as confirmed currently by Galerie Nierendorf, Berlin.
