A large blue and white vase. Korea. Joseon dynasty, 19th century

Thickly potted with cylindrical neck and rounded shoulder tapering in towards the foot, decorated in underglaze grey-blue with numerous roundels with the longevity su (shou) symbol between a cloud pattern at the shoulder and a band of petals at the foot. The tall neck with five clouds between a petal and a key-fret border.
Height 52 cm

The vase from the Gregory Henderson collection (former Foreign Service Officer and specialist for Korea, 1922 - 1988) is also marked Un Hyon 'Cloud Hill' on the base, which probably means the name of the palace in which the Prince Regent of Korea lived during his reign from 1864-1873. It is suggested in the Henderson catalogue that "such pieces were used as targets for darts in a game played by women of the court and little princes".

Provenance
