A fine wood netsuke of Ono no Komachi. Mid-19th century

The ancient poetess sits on a withered grave post (sotoba), her feet resting on oak leaves. The detailed carving shows her emaciated chest, a mino slung over her shoulders, a purse hanging from her neck, as well as a sedge hat at her back, and a basket on her arm; the right hand clutches a staff, presently replaced in horn.
