An ivory netsuke of a peasant. Late 18th/early 19th century

Reclining and resting the head on his right arm, with a bamboo rod held to the shoulder while a rat crouches behind him. The rat’s eyes of black glass.
Height 1.8 cm; length 7.5 cm

The piece can be turned around so it comes to a standing position. The rat has been somewhat misinterpreted for it displays the paws of a feline.
