A pair of early Düsseldorf silver candlesticks

Square feet with gadrooned borders supporting corresponding baluster shafts with vase-shaped nozzles. H 16.5 cm, weight 485 g.
Marks of Conrad Hadernach, 1708/09.

Conrad Hardernach was court goldsmith of Elector Jan Wellems and Anna Maria Luisa Medici. In Düsseldorf he also produced a pair of altar candlesticks for the Church of Saint Lambert and a communion garniture for the court church of Saint Andrew (cf. cat. Anna Maria Luisa Medici, Kurfürstin von der Pfalz, Düsseldorf 1988, p. 142.)

Literature

The Electoress also later gifted an almost identical pair of candlesticks to her chamberlain Averardo Serristori in Florence, which were auctioned by Sotheby's in Florence in 1977 and 2007.
