A Meissen porcelain figure of a dancing harlequin

Harlequin dancing on an earth mound base from a series of Commedia dell'Arte figures made for the Duke of Sachsen-Weißenfels. Blue crossed swords mark to the back of the base. One hand with minor retouches. H 13.6 cm.
Model by Johann Joachim Kaendler and Peter Reinicke, 1744, formed shortly after.

In his workshop records for the year 1744, Kaendler mentions numerous Italian comedy figures made for the Duke of Sachsen-Weißenfels. This figure of Harlequin and the following figure of Capitano are just two examples of the large group produced for Johann Adolf II.
