Reinier Nooms was born in Amsterdam around the year 1623/24. He specilised in maritime painting. He was himself a sailor and signed many of his pieces, like the present work, with "Zeeman". Nooms collaborated with the publisher Cornelis Danckerts to ensure that his works were widely disseminated in the form of prints.
